Overview

New Zealand shares most specialist college examinations with Australia through joint trans-Tasman colleges (RACS, RACP, ANZCA, ACEM, RANZCR, RANZCP). The NZREX Clinical is the primary IMG pathway examination.

The NZREX Clinical (New Zealand Registration Examination) is an OSCE-format examination for international medical graduates seeking general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. It tests clinical skills across medicine, surgery, general practice, paediatrics, psychiatry and obstetrics.

Preparation Tips

  • Book early — sittings fill quickly
  • Practice OSCE stations with a partner — communication and process marks are critical
  • Use NZ and Australian clinical guidelines (not UK or US guidelines)
  • Focus on primary care and community presentations

Competent Authority Pathway

Doctors from recognised competent authority countries (Australia, UK, Canada, Ireland, USA) may qualify for registration without the NZREX Clinical depending on qualifications and registration status. Check directly with MCNZ.
