The Australian Training Structure

Intern Year (PGY1)
Mandatory 12-month internship at an accredited hospital. Required for full AHPRA registration.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) — PGY2+
After internship, doctors work as RMOs building experience and applying to specialist college programmes.

Specialist Training (Registrar) — 4–7 years
Competitive entry to specialist college training. Part-exams and fellowship exams required throughout training.

Fellowship + Specialist Registration
Fellowship (e.g. FRACS, FRACP) leads to specialist registration with AHPRA.
